Until very recently, autism was considered to be strictly a psychological disorder, but in the last several years researchers have begun to discover that the basic physiology of people with autism is much, much different than 'normal' people. With this discovery, many people have started to view autism as a medical problem, or in many cases, a series of medical problems, that can be addressed in order to alleviate behaviors considered to be 'autistic'. Treating the underlying causes of abnormalities is commonly referred to as biomedical treatments. As of yet, there is no known biomedical 'cure' for autism, and in fact, the notion of a cure is quite controversial in some circles. But that doesn't mean that you cannot improve the lives of people with autism by using biomedical treatments, and this is the goal of this site, to provide information on how biomedical treatments can be used to benefit people with a diagnosis of autism. If you have surfed the Internet, or read some of the more popular books on biomedical treatments, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed with the amount of information available. We recommend our Getting Started With Biomedical guide for some quick and easy first steps to get started with 'biomed'.
